In early 2011, a fellow unapologetic geek took it upon himself to watch all of Star Trek, from the original series through Enterprise. His only real exposure through Trek before this came from the J.J. Abrams reboot and the two episodes of TNG I forced him to watch a few years ago ("Q Who" and "The Inner Light"). He hadn't avoided Star Trek because he didn't understand it; on the contrary, he had avoided it because he knew he would like it and was afraid of having to learn the ins and outs of such an enormous franchise. This is where I came in, because I encouraged him to tackle it and promised to watch some of it along with him.

He started from the beginning, with Star Trek (TOS), and he decided to keep a log. As he watched each episode (and later, each movie), he would write down a few quick thoughts about it and share them on Facebook so that others could experience Trek for the first time vicariously. When he got to Star Trek: The Next Generation, I decided to join in and to follow his example by keeping a log of my own. This is that log.

Of course, I've been a Trekkie for as long as I can remember, so my notes contain spoiler sections, where I put my thoughts about how each episode figures into later Trek. I separate these notes for my friend's sake and for the sake of anybody else who just happens to be watching the series for the first time. Some of my notes are quick and unpolished, but some are long and detailed, depending on the importance of the episode and my mood on the day that I rewatched it.

One last thing: I nitpick. With Star Trek, it's something of an obsession. Therefore, you will find lots of notes that are overly critical of tiny details and plot inconsistencies. Though I try to tone it down as much as I can, I truly can't help it. It may seem from my notes that I don't even particularly like Star Trek, but naturally, nothing could be further from the truth. I nitpick it because I love it.

Though the rewatch isn't yet complete, I do intend over the next few years to go through the entire franchise, even my least favorite parts (namely, Star Trek: Voyager) but not including Star Trek: The Animated Series or any of the non-canon extended universe stuff like books, comics, or fan-made products. I may not go in order and I may not finish for a very long time, but feel free to check out what I have done so far.
